University Club
The University Club, often known simply as the UClub, is a social organization founded in 1908. Until it was demolished in 2022, the club’s three-story building was a landmark in State College.
Era: 21st Century Centre County
Millheim
Millheim is a historic Centre County community that for more than 150 years was the industrial center of Penns Valley. Its history has been shaped by Elk Creek, which provided power to the mills that gave the borough its name.
Limestone
Limestone has played an essential role in Centre County’s economic history. Widely used for both industrial and agricultural purposes, limestone has been mined in the county for more than 200 years.
University Baptist & Brethren Church
University Baptist & Brethren Church, founded in 1922, was the first Baptist church established in State College. Originally founded as University Baptist Church, it affiliated with the Church of the Brethren in 1968.
Boalsburg Heritage Museum
The Boalsburg Heritage Museum preserves the history of the Centre County village known for the Boal Mansion, Pennsylvania Military Museum, and Memorial Day celebration. The museum is in the Boalsburg historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Interstate 80
Interstate 80 (the “Keystone Shortway”) is a major transportation artery for Centre County, and is part of one of the nation’s most heavily traveled cross-country highways. Its completion in 1970 marked the beginning of a transformation of US-322 into a network of super-highways that connect with I-80 in Centre County.
Penn State Golf Courses
Penn State’s golf courses have evolved from a rudimentary course of four or five holes in the late 1800s to the 18-hole Blue and White courses that the university operates today.
White Out
The “White Out” is a nationally recognized game hosted by Penn State football each year at Beaver Stadium. It is an atmosphere that embodies tradition and creates challenges for opposing teams with a sea of white shirts that students and fans sport throughout the stadium.
Nadine Kofman
Nadine Kofman was a long-time journalist, author, and historian, who in different ways, helped preserve the history of Centre County. As a reporter for the Centre Daily Times, she wrote the “Way Back When” column. She also wrote “About Town” for Town & Gown magazine.
College Heights Exxon
College Heights Exxon in State College is the oldest continuously operating service station in Centre County. The distinctive station was built by John N. and G. Dewey Krumrine on land that had been part of the Krumrine family farm in what is now the College Heights neighborhood.
